19th Episcopal District: First Orangia Conference Sons of Allen Convention (OCSoA), held at Mount Horeb AME Church in Welkom on 12-13 July 2014 was a success-beyond-measure!!!. May the good Lord Bless the Leadership. What stood out was firstly the WALK OF FAITH where Men took to the streets to reach out and find own Brothers. Secondly the elective process which went smoothly and resulted in the installation of new officers and lastly the support this Convention received from Presiding Elders. At this event 27 Men chanted "We, the members of Sons of Allen Men’s Fellowship of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, accept Christ as our personal Saviour and Lord and guided by the Holy Spirit, dedicated ourselves fresh to His Service in the church, in our homes and in our country" as they were wearing the official attire of Sons of Allen. 19th Episcopal SOA President, visited us during the Convention in Thabong, he shared with us why maroon colour; SONS OF ALLEN UNIFORM ( MAROON BLAZERS) Why maroon ? Maroons(from the Latin-American Spanish word Cimarron (fugitive or runaway) were African refugees that had escaped from slavery in the Americans and formed independent settlements. The same word also gives us the English verb “ to maroon” which means ‘ to throw away or ‘reject’. When there escapees of African origin were in the mountains, they formed communities that we re referred to as the maroons and created a language that accommodated all of them. The language represented a mixture of a number of languages, it was ‘slang’. An example of such a language is clearly reflected in Negro spirituals e.g. Kumbaya my Lord .... When the Spanish were defeated by the English, some of the ex-slaves lived among the English but preferred to be called the MAROONS to remind themselves where they came from. One of the leaders of the Maroons , who stood out, was Francois Mackandal, a voodoo priest who led a six year rebellion against the white plantation owners in Haiti that preceded the Haitan Revolution. MAROON therefore reminds us that ‘ we were slaves in relation in our belonging to the Methodist Church until our founder , Richard Allen , led us to a newly-found refuge , the AME Church’ We are the MAROONS!! Mt. Zion, SoA during Valentine's Celebration on the 21 Feb 2016. We celebrated the day on the 21st because on the 14th was our Father's day, Remembering the late Bishop Richard Allen and Rev Mangena & Me Charlotte Mannye-Maxeke. Our Reverend Thato Matsaseng shared the story behind Sir Valentine's 'He was barred to marry couoles but he continued encourage couples to get married' until he was killed. He further said who knows if it wasn't of him maybe even today, marriages would have still been banned or treated as illegal. 13 of 24
